The three primary terms in the New Testament referring to church leaders are elder, overseer, and pastor. These three words describe the group of godly men who provide shepherding, leading, caring, feeding work for the congregation. A few additional words indicate the preaching work of church leaders as well as their authoritative influence in the congregation. The role of deacons is to come alongside the elders to assist them in caring for the local church.
