Welcome to this extended seminar with Donncha Kavanagh on the history and Metaphysics of Games, Play & Fun.

In the next couple of episodes Donncha will talk about the background, key ideas, concepts and theories surrounding the role of games and play in human society.

In part 2 Donncha juxtaposes the split between work and play as distinct domains of human character (good and bad; valued versus vulgar); and the modern era’s increasingly unashamed appreciation for leisure.

Modernity; contemporary and post-modern treatment of games and play. From theorising games and play as the genesis of human culture – homo ludens – through to the contemporary move to employ the mechanics of games and play in purely utilitarian applications, the psycho-physiological application of games and play experience for behavioural control, profit and production.
