Pebofatso Mokoena - Internal Probes: Reading a Body
Listening Time | 10 min

In this podcast episode, David Krut Podcast host Britt Lawton spoke to Pebofatso Mokoena in a remote interview considering the early closure of his solo exhibition titled Internal Probes (Open 27 February 2020). The exhibition closed early in accordance with the national lock down order from the South African government in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Here, Pebofatso Mokoena speaks about ideas of reading a body – be it a body of artworks or a human body – in a particular context. Pebofatso considers how different interpretations of his artwork can be made by viewers based on their own understanding and rational comparisons. He also elaborates on the conceptual influence of his residency in Tehran in 2018.

The podcast episode image is a detail from Mokoena’s artwork Early Morning Super Models, 2020 which poses relevant questions in reflecting on South Africa’s national shutdown, “Stay at home or leave?”
