The World According to Roger Ballen

In this David Krut Bookstore episode of the David krut Podcast, Annabel WIlliams introduces a new publication on Roger Ballen published by Thames & Hudson titled 'The World According to Roger Ballen." In light of the National Shutdown taking place in South Africa, the Johannesburg book launch for 'The World According to Roger Ballen' published by Thames & Hudson was cancelled. The David Krut Bookstore, Jonathan Ball Publishers and the Rabbi Cyril Harris Community Centre were to host this anticipated event along with Roger Ballen to promote this new title.

The first audio clip is taken from a promotional video for Ballenesque - Roger Ballen: A Retrospective. This is a 2017 Thames and Hudson publication that portrays the world of the photographer. Here, Roger reveals important elements that predominate his aesthetic. This publication is a personal account of Roger Ballen’s career, including rare and privileged insights into Ballen’s photographic practice and contains iconic and unpublished imagery.

In 2019, a large exhibition of the photographer took place at the Halle Saint-Pierre in Paris. In this clip, Roger explains his approach and gives some insight to better understand his work as showcased in the exhibition.

Besides Photography, Roger has been working on many different projects as installations and he is also well-known for directing the music video "I Fink You Freeky", created for the cult band Die Antwoord. In this clip, Wladimir Autain interviewed him on the occasion of his solo exhibition "The world according to Roger Ballen" at La Halle Saint-Pierre in Paris.
