This daf is in the middle of a long sugiyah that deals with halachic limit cases of Levirate marriage. Reading a mahloket between Reish Lakish and Rabbi Yochanan illuminates some of the legal problems and potential solutions around the idea of “ervah” in this perek. Can a woman’s status as an “ervah” be changed? And if so how might the idea of “ervah” work as a halachic category?
