Dr. Nancy O’Hara is a board certified pediatrician. In 1998, she began a practice in consulting for children with special medical needs. She has continued to shift her practice to reflect functional and holistic care of individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders like PANDAS/PANS, ADHD, OCD and Lyme. She educates clinicians internationally on understanding their patients' ties with autoimmune disorders. Dr. O’Hara has published a book called “Demystifying PANS / PANDAS: A Functional Medicine Desktop Reference on Basal Ganglia Encephalitis” to help parents understand these diagnoses and how they can best care for and support their children.

In today’s episode, host Shay Beider welcomes Dr. Nancy O’Hara to discuss the rise of autoimmune disease in general and how this has correlated to a rise in PANS and PANDAS. Dr. O’Hara breaks down the environmental triggers of Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infection and identifies some of the behavioral symptoms that can be present. She also explains how she has adapted a 3 prolonged holistic approach to healing neurological disorders by treating the symptoms, triggers and inflammation in the basal ganglia. Dr. O’Hara provides advice on how families can maintain hope when receiving these difficult diagnoses.
