Sam Hester is a graphic artist who is a leader in the field of graphic recording and graphic medicine. She uses comics and graphics to tell stories about people’s lives and their healthcare experiences. She creates these comics from her hometown in Calgary, Canada. In 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, Sam created a series called The Sprawl, Alone Together. She highlighted life in the pandemic, and readers were able to deeply connect with the struggles she depicted. She’s been featured in her community newsletter Ramsay, RESIST!. Through her comics she shares her passion of community building and highlights the connectedness people share through their emotions.

In today’s episode, host Shay Beider speaks with Sam Hester on how she began using comics in storytelling, and shares how she has integrated graphics into her own life. Sam is an advocate for implementing images into healthcare, and discusses how she communicated her mom’s preferences to her caretakers through illustrations. Sam touches on how graphic medicine helps empower people to tell their own stories, and the healing powers of illustrating your personal experiences. During this episode, Sam shows some of her comics that she has drawn over the years, and explains the purpose behind their creation.
