In this text, the religious want Jesus dead. He is a threat to everything that they are really about. They pursue his arrest with a grand vision of wiping the earth clean of this nuisance. But in reality, Jesus is preparing the people to have empty religion scrubbed. Jesus is bringing life in a way that religion aims to provide but ultimately can not give.
Who do you wish was dead?
Hopefully you don’t wish the death of anyone. But if we are honest, we probably wish that we didn’t have to engage with certain people any longer in our everyday context.
The religious leaders of Jesus’ day wanted Jesus dead. He was a threat to everything that they were about. But in promising to destroy the vain and empty religion, he also promised life. In this text, Jesus stands up in the middle of a religious festival and invites anyone to come to him.
