Dealing with stress, what stress?

Educators are stressed, that is not news. We are stressed over things we cannot control, like perhaps our students are broken, and our hearts break. We seem to have more responsibilities at school, we are teaching online, offline, worried about COVID, worried about our families...

Perhaps we have too many courses to manage, or we want to do more and cannot. Perhaps we are not as healthy as we know we should be, we eat too much chocolate. Perhaps we feel guilty because we spend so much time with these strangers’ children and not enough time with our own… the list goes on.

We’re not here to solve all educator problems, or even claim to be experts. But I found some suggestions that may help deal with the day-to-day worries and stresses. These are small one day at a time ideas.

Sandy, what are some ways that you have found that help you destress?

Go for a walk!

Listen to music, podcasts, or any other audio while you walk. If you have a pet, include daily walks as part of your de-stress routine. Talk to your dog, just get away for 5-10 minutes or longer if you need it. Taking this time is worth it and it will calm your nerves.

Focus on what you can control.

There are many things that happen in life that we can do nothing about, but we let their existence stress us out. Do your best to control what you can, and if there is something else that you cannot, then let it go for the time being. Do what you can, keep yourself healthy, and try to  focus on the things you can do something about.

Have a little bit of chocolate.

A small bite of something that makes you happy will do just that. Remember to keep everything in moderation, but allow yourself a small treat, you have earned it! Just don’t go crazy on the amount. :)
