THE GOOD

Spielberg weaves a compelling family story through a larger war picture. Almost a blend of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS and SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. Arresting images, effective horror. CGI holds up.

THE BAD

Cruise is too likable for the sleaze character he's playing, creating an awkward dissonance at times. Second act in the basement overstays its welcome, repeating beats and losing tension.

THE DOWNRIGHT CAMPY

"Hummus? I told you to get some real food!"

.

.

.

Perhaps not a classic when compared to Spielberg's other works, but by any other director, probably. Stands the test of time thanks to Spielberg's ability to tell an epic story on a personal level.
