Forgiveness can be hard because we confuse forgiveness with condoning hurtful behavior.
Condoning behavior means we agree with the behavior. Forgiving behavior means we are ready to let go of the hurt in order to release ourselves from the anger and pain.
Sometimes, forgiving yourself can be even harder than forgiving others.
An important element of forgiving yourself is distinguishing between mistakes and wrongdoing.
In the case of wrongdoing, forgiving yourself includes apologizing to those you’ve hurt and correcting the wrong when possible. Then we must release our anguish about the past.
