*Tara Westover grew up in rural Idaho, cut off from the outside world – she had no birth certificate, no medical records and no formal education.

*She worked alongside her brothers in her tyrannical father’s scrap metal junkyard, risking life and limb on a daily basis.

*Westover’s decision to get away, to educate herself and discover a world beyond the isolation and abuse at home, eventually took her to college and on to unimaginable academic success at Cambridge and Harvard.

*But at the same time, this life-changing education, and the new perspective it brought, strained her relationship with her family to breaking point.
