Paul Williams wrote “An Old-Fashioned Love Song.” Randy Neuman penned “Mamma Told Me Not to Come.” And Laura Nero wrote “Eli’s Coming.” These were just three of the big hits for Three Dog Night that were written by others. The group had 21 Billboard Top 40 hits and three of those hit no. 1 between 1969 and 1975. Their biggest hit “Joy to the World” sold 4 million records and was the no. 1 recording in 1971. I interviewed Cory Wells from the group and he talked about the band’s name origin, their success, and a million-seller in 1973 called “Shambala.”
