This is THAT episode. Let's talk about the uncomfortable stuff. Being raised in the church, sex was always a touch-and-go topic of contention, you were told that sex outside of marriage was unholy, that gay sex was shameful & deviant and abstinence was an acceptable form of contraception, OMG the horror. Frankly these same teachings are still being taught today. The push for sexual purity was so intricately tied to one's "Christianess" and often correlated to your relationship with your God, that it wove a prison for one's sexuality. There was a hierarchy of sin created in the church, and sexual sin was allocated the highest number of points. This has bred an entire generation of young women and some men who lived secret lives afraid of being shamed or lived sexually pure lives and feel the aftermath of guilt and shame. Coupled with the archaic teachings of African traditionalism and the perfect concoction for irrationality, chaos and spiritual abuse were brewed. In this episode, my guest Manzi and I deconstruct and reconstruct these preachings while identifying how truly problematic they were and still are.
