I had been a photographer for years. Throughout high school and college, photography was a serious passion of mine. I even had a photography side hustle in college. But when I graduated and decided to go into the photography business myself, things changed. Suddenly, I didn’t enjoy it anymore. As soon as I put a monetary value on my craft, as soon as I had to answer to demanding clients, I no longer wanted to take photos. And I actually ended up selling all my photography equipment.

Like I said, not all passions make great business, and that’s where deciding what business venture to dive into can be tricky. How do you figure out which passions will make good businesses? How will you know that you won’t burn out from it? And how do you know you’ll still find joy in it when you start charging clients for it?

In episode 13 of the Black Girl Fly podcast, we continue our conversation about striking out in business. We dig into balancing your craft with the need to charge for services, and we dish about our own experiences with frustrating clients. Finally, we discuss what ultimately led us to the decisions to either go all in or get out of our small business ventures.

If you didn’t catch the beginning of our conversation, be sure to check out episode 12 where we get into some awkward encounters during our earlier side hustle days.
