After Jesus' celebrative  ride of kingship into Jerusalem with the throngs of people he went into temple. He looked all round, observing the people and actions. Mark 11 relates that that on Sunday Jesus entered into the temple in Jerusalem. When he had looked around at everything, it being now evening, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.
But the next morning, the second day, our Monday, he returns with the Twelve and crowds await him. On this day he does two prophetic, provocative actions. They are related to two themes: God's temple and the Messiah as the Son of David. He rebukes and teaches by means of a rhetorical question. In other words, he threw down the gauntlet - the bold challenge to his enemies to carry out their stated intention among themselves, which was to kill him.
