After 25 years of active service, Major Gallagher finally had the opportunity to begin his teaching career. He took a position as a high school math teacher and changed his title to Mr. Gallagher. While teaching, he became concerned about the policies and procedures around school shooting and felt there was a better way. He began researching all aspects of this issue. Using his math background, he dove into the statistical analysis of the shootings and then began researching the psychology and sociology behind these events. Finally, his research included laws regarding information sharing about ‘at risk’ students among school administrators and teachers, finding major errors in the understanding of the law by administrators, limiting the sharing of information, endangering staff and students. Based on his research, Joe is now writing a book to share his findings, with the hope of improving school security and improving mental health support for at-risk students.
