Lucky Seven

July 07, 2007 06:00 - 3.76 MB

Today's date is 7-7-07 and so it's only fitting to have Holmes! take the reigns of TheSongOfTheDay and sing his "Lucky 7." It's also fitting in that our friend and fellow song-writer Matt Scholtka gets married today. We'll be hoisting 7 vodka tonics to the lucky couple! We wish them all the best!

What's That Smell?

July 06, 2007 06:00 - 1.93 MB

Here's one of the oldest ones from Jason's archives. It dates back to our high school years when songs about obese, security guards sitting in tiny, smelly offices seemed the thing to do. Obviously, we've since come along way now that we write songs about I.T. workers, priests, and dudes with ponytails.

How 'Bout Never (Does Never Work For You)?

July 05, 2007 06:00 - 2.57 MB

What we wish we had the guts to say to our boss sometimes.

How You Gettin' Home Blues

July 04, 2007 06:00 - 2.79 MB

Written years ago when Jason couldn't drive. Jason's Dad wanted nothing to do with chauffeuring him or his friends around. So, Jason wrote this song.

Do You Mind?

July 03, 2007 06:00 - 2.83 MB

Sometimes it would be nice if the world were just a little quieter.

Doobie-Doobie Doo

June 30, 2007 06:00 - 1.46 MB

Sinatra's mantra from Strangers In The Night as realized at 3:30 in the morning.

Grandpa's Chair

June 29, 2007 06:00 - 1.42 MB

Obviously, we believe at in sharing music here at TheSongOfTheDay. When going through our archives, we found this song dating back to 1998. It's notable - to us at least - for being the first song we were able to share via the internet. We had just gotten our site www.beatnikturtle.com up and running (it was a page) and we posted this song to download as a WAV since mp3s weren't as prevalant then. Of course, broadband didn't really exist to the extent it does now either and it took forever fo...

Yard Sale

June 28, 2007 06:00 - 2.23 MB

It's summer and there's yard sales. This is just but one story.

Our power-pop love song to the great Helen Keller.

The Boy With No Soul

June 26, 2007 06:00 - 3.97 MB

What can we say. We are huge Uncle Shelby fans. Ryan and Tom took Matt's lyrics and crafted this beautiful, if disturbing, song.

Saint Gratus

June 25, 2007 06:00 - 2.99 MB

Stop mooching our beer! This song asks St. Gratus (who really doesn't have much to do with beer - just vineyards) to watch over the fridge.

They're Steamed Aren't They?

June 24, 2007 06:00 - 2.15 MB

This song features Jason's Dad. Years ago, he walked in during the recording session to tell him dinner was ready. Jason quickly hit the sampler and caught this sentence fragment and put it to use throughout the song.

An ode to Randy's circuit breaker.

Something A Little Different

June 16, 2007 06:00 - 3.48 MB

This song was written and recorded for an electronic music concert - back in the early part of the 90s. It tips it's hat to the Art of Noise as well as Jason's parents who unknowingly provided many of the vocal sound samples used throughout the song.

Roll The Dice

June 15, 2007 06:00 - 1.36 MB

This song was one of a series of allegedly "failed theme songs" for the board gaming podcast BoardGameGeek, a.k.a. "GeekSpeak."

Barely Able

Automagically

June 13, 2007 06:00 - 1.8 MB

Another song from our successful attempt to complete an entire album of songs within February of 2007 for Record Production Month (www.rpmchallenge.com). Holmes! pulled out the Devo card to Matt's lyrics and we were only more than happy to oblige. The pre-release of this album, entitled "All In A Day's Work", is currently available at iTunes.

Feeling out of place...like a fish out of water or a June Bug in July

The Love Notary

June 11, 2007 06:00 - 3.38 MB

Featuring the great Qadree Holmes on vocals, this song goes out to all Notary Publics everywhere. This song came about when Jason was asked to notarize a few immigration documents for two recently married friends of his - one of whom was applying for U.S. citizenship. When they asked Jason whether he could notarize their signatures "to prove it wasn't a sham marriage," he informed them they were in luck - he wasn't only a Notary, he was the "Love Notary." They laughed a bit at his commen...

June 07, 2007 06:00 - 2.54 MB

This is a souped-up version of a song written for the short film The Troubled Life of Guy Dickie (2005). Eric, Brian, and Jerry briefly performed as the acoustic sideband named after the film and this song was a part of those performances.

A version of this song will be featured on Pete's upcoming album alongside songs about Guitar Center and 50 Cent. Keep an eye out at www.nicepeter.com for details.

I Don't Want To Work Today

June 04, 2007 06:00 - 3.61 MB

We thought this song best fit a Monday. It's from our forthcoming album, ALL IN A DAY'S WORK. (The pre-release of the album is already available at iTunes, but the CD's not due until August...probably because the CD duplicators don't want to work on it today.)

Theme To Dolphins Of Damnation

June 03, 2007 06:00 - 1.35 MB

Our friend Ted Blegen (of Ants and Commuter Railway Blues fame) has made the big move to Los Angeles. This song was the theme we made for the sketch comedy group he was in called, The Dolphins of Damnation. They performed in and around Chicago and at Second City on many occasions. We wish Ted the best as he takes on Hollywood (though he's still Skyping songs into TheSongOfTheDay.com).

King Of Cicada

May 29, 2007 06:00 - 2.94 MB

This song was 17 years in the making. It was written back in 1990 - the last time the 17-year Magicicada came out. It was inspired by a newspaper article written at the time about people eating the bugs ("They taste like potatoes!"). It was recorded and completed with one exception - the middle was to include the noisy roar of the 17-year cycle cicada. Unfortunately, Jason ended up spending the summer in Europe and missed seeing, hearing, and recording them. Disappointed, he vowed to finish...

But That's Another Thing I'll Never Do

May 21, 2007 06:00 - 1.93 MB

We wanted to write notes about how we wrote this song, but unfortunately, it's another thing we'll never do.

AWSM GTI

May 19, 2007 06:00 - 3.85 MB

Before there were websites, theater shows, podcasts, and tv series to write themes for, there were cars. This song dates back to the early 90s and is about a friend's GTI. It had a pimped out stereo system with a dozen speakers and a subwoofer and a license plate that read "AWSM GTI."
