The Fistula Fad - King Louis the XIV's Fistula Fashion - Bad Ideas Podcast

King Louis the 14th found himself in dire need of surgery to fix a fistula. A fistula is an alternative canal from the rectal cavity usually into the butt cheek. Charles-François Félix, a barber, was chosen to do the surgery. He took six months to practice, repairing and also causing holes in 75 prisoners and dissenters. After that he would repair King Louis's fistula and retire in wealth. After the surgery the people of France wanted to show their support. Some wore bandages, but others had barbers give them the same surgery even when they didn't need it.
