"Backstage with Mark Metcalf" presents "We don't go past the bridge": A discussion on race in Milwaukee. The series begins with poet Dasha Kelly.
With all of the stories in the news this year that deal with the issue of race in Milwaukee, it occurred to me that white folks in this town don’t have the faintest idea what it’s like to be a black person in this town. And it’s not a conversation that anyone seems to be very interested in having.
A number one ranking on Salon magazine’s list of America’s most segregated urban areas, higher levels of unemployment and a variety of other indicators suggest that a very different experience exists for people of different races within our city.
To begin our series on race in Milwaukee, I talked with Dasha Kelly, poet, writer and founder of Still Waters Collective.
