You remember Richard Cobbett, right? From our scintillating Christmas special of Open Crowd Source back in 2015?

No? Then you might remember him from other things, such as the talk about comedy in games, or the interview with Rihanna Pratchett, or the panel about games journalism, from AdventureX 2016.

Perhaps you even recognize him by name as a writer for RockPaperShotgun and PC Gamer, among other esteemed publications, or even as a writer on games like Sunless Sea or The Long Journey Home.

Maybe you don’t know him at all, but we had to get all those links in there, because we promised. At any rate, he’s on the show this week, and this is what he looks like after spending two days with a bunch of adventure game nuts at a conference:

He’ll probably never speak to us again after publishing this photo.

Richard is always a delight to talk to because he contains a seemingly endless bounty of knowledge about all things related to games, including how to write for them and how to write about them.

We would gladly listen to Richard talk all day long, and that is why we attached ourselves, leech-like, to his side for the majority of the duration of last year’s AdventureX conference, and this probably helped contribute to his somewhat loopy appearance in the above photo.

He does make reference to himself being “second choice” in this episode, and this is by no means an indication of what place he holds in our hearts. It is simply a reference to the fact that we had a different guest planned for this episode who had to reschedule, and Richard kindly stepped in at short notice to take her place. Because that’s the kind of guy he is.

In this episode, we talk about what it’s like to go from being a games journalist to actually writing for games, with many interesting (but always pertinent) detours along the way, as usual.

Bizarrely, this image comes up a lot when searching for Richard Cobbett as well.

Incidentally, we’re happy to report that Gareth is fine amidst the horrors of Storm Doris (he is not, I repeat, not the injured schoolgirl in the linked article — that was a case of mistaken identity), although it was touch and go there for a minute, as the first minute or so of this episode plainly shows.
