This week we’ve seen that Neanderthals were humans, just like us. But what about the DNA differences that separate us and them?

Well, keep in mind that many people alive today have DNA variations that came from Neanderthals. This means Neanderthals and what’s called “modern humans” married and had children. So they were definitely human!

But what about those differences? Well, only a very small fraction of our DNA is distinct from Neanderthals—only about 80 genes. These minor differences gave Neanderthals a distinct look—but one that is certainly within the bounds of human variety.

These “ancient” humans were descendants of Adam and Eve, like us.
