God doesn’t tell Adam he was an apeman and he’d return to an apeman! No, he confirms that Adam was made of dust and to dust he would return.

Did humans evolve from ape-like creatures? Well consider this. When Adam and Eve sinned, they brought death into creation and Adam was told, “By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken, for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
God created Adam from the dust of the ground and gave him the breath of life. Once death entered creation God reminded Adam that he was of the dust and he’d return to that very dust.
