Reflections with Andy - Rest in Him - Zephaniah 3:14-17

Throughout the season of Advent, we’ll have a weekday reflection based on suggested scriptures from a great resource entitled The Common Rule. You can find a calendar of the daily readings here - https://www.thecommonrule.org/advent-readings CS Lewis once said, “All that we call human history--money, poverty, ambition, war, prostitution, classes, empires, slavery--[is] the long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy.”  Today in the prophet, w...

Reflections with Andy - Peace - Romans 15:4-13

Throughout the season of Advent, we’ll have a weekday reflection based on suggested scriptures from a great resource entitled The Common Rule. You can find a calendar of the daily readings here - https://www.thecommonrule.org/advent-readings Paul gives us repeated passages from the Old Testament today and tells us this. God has been at work, in all this, to bring the Good News to all the world. The Gospel is good news to all who hear it.  God has always been at work, to bring the Good News ...

Reflections with Andy - Good News - Luke 4:16-21

December 11, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.41 MB

Throughout the season of Advent, we’ll have a weekday reflection based on suggested scriptures from a great resource entitled The Common Rule. You can find a calendar of the daily readings here - https://www.thecommonrule.org/advent-readings Today, we see Jesus’ sermon to His hometown folks.  He reads from Isaiah and shares that the Lord has anointed Him to bring good news to the poor.  This is fulfilled at that moment because Jesus is the fulfillment of that.  He is good news. As I’ve hear...

Sunday Sermon - Jesus is Peace

December 11, 2023 11:00 - 14 minutes - 10.1 MB

Today, we look at Mark 1: 1-8. What does a Christian look like?  We see in our Confirmation Sunday, as these young persons confess and confirm their hope, what a Christian looks like.  Where Jesus is, there is peace.  Peace is found in the person of Jesus Christ.

Reflections with Andy - Peace and Hosility - Ephesians 2: 13-22

December 08, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.39 MB

Throughout the season of Advent, we’ll have a weekday reflection based on suggested scriptures from a great resource entitled The Common Rule. You can find a calendar of the daily readings here - https://www.thecommonrule.org/advent-readings In our reading today, we are reminded that Jesus preached peace to those who are near and those who are far. And through the cross, he has ended the division, that is the hostility between us. He doesn't end the disagreements and or the differences, but...

Reflections with Andy - Are You Thirsty? - Isaiah 55: 1-5

December 07, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.35 MB

Throughout the season of Advent, we’ll have a weekday reflection based on suggested scriptures from a great resource entitled The Common Rule. You can find a calendar of the daily readings here - https://www.thecommonrule.org/advent-readings Today, the prophet asks us a question. Why are you spending money on that which is not bread and laboring for that which does not satisfy?  We are busy, we are thirsty. But we are not thirsty for one more activity.  We are not thirsty for one more thing...

Reflections with Andy - Comfort - Isaiah 40:1-5

December 06, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.12 MB

Throughout the season of Advent, we’ll have a weekday reflection based on suggested scriptures from a great resource entitled The Common Rule. You can find a calendar of the daily readings here - https://www.thecommonrule.org/advent-readings.   Today, we hear the words of Isaiah, “Comfort.”  I recount how, as I kid I was always puzzled by Mr. Rogers putting on comfortable clothes at the beginning of each episode, but now I find myself doing the exact same thing each day. I put on something ...

Reflections with Andy - What is Advent?

December 05, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.51 MB

Advent teaches us so very much.  It teaches us hope. And peace. And joy.  And love. But above all else, it teaches us trust. Advent, at its core, is about waiting and it is about trust. It is about trusting in God to make all things wait. Advent is about when we remember the waiting of the people of God for Jesus’ first coming. And it is where we wait now for His second coming. Today, we’ll talk a little more about the symbols, what they mean, and what they can teach us. Join us for our da...

Sunday Sermon - Jesus is Hope

December 04, 2023 11:00 - 16 minutes - 11.1 MB

In our Traditional message for the first Sunday of Advent, we look at this truth - Jesus is hope. Not that Jesus brings hope, but that hope is found in the person of Jesus. Andy shares with us from 1 Corinthians 1: 3-9.  Join us as we learn hope is found fully in Jesus!

Reflections with Andy - What is the Church Year?

December 04, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.36 MB

Yesterday was the first Sunday of Advent. What does that mean?  For some of us, we may be familiar with Advent, but we aren’t sure what it is really about. For others, we may have no idea. Advent is the first season of the church year, and while we talk about it (more tomorrow), today we talk about the church year. What are the seasons?  How do they work? What are they about?  Why should we even care?  I think you’ll find looking more in-depth at the seasons of the church year to be a reward...

Reflections with Andy - Palm Sunday - Zechariah 9:9 and Matthew 21: 1-11

December 01, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.24 MB

We often see Palm Sunday as an act of humility by Jesus. It was, yes, but it was kingly humility. Jesus is declaring for all to see that He is the Messiah. He is the one prophesied about. And when He rides that donkey into town, all can see He is declaring Himself King of Kings and Lord of Lords. As one of my mentors once told me, Palm Sunday was the most messianic thing that Jesus did upon the earth outside of the resurrection. Today, we see that it is a direct fulfillment of the Old Testam...

Reflections with Andy - Out of Egypt - Hosea 11:1 and Matthew 2: 13-15

November 30, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.23 MB

This is a beautiful example of how the Bible all fits together.  Hosea is reminding us of Israel’s past, how God called them out of Egypt back to the promised land in the book of Exodus, while also pointing to Jesus.  In the same way that Israel fled to safety in Egypt, Jesus and the Holy Family fled to safety in Egypt.  We see this beautiful connection.  In Israel, we see that pointing to the work and the person of Jesus, and in Jesus, we see a fulfillment of the story of Israel.  The Bible...

Reflections with Andy - John the Baptist - Malachi 3: 1, 4: 5-5 and Matthew 11: 7-15

November 29, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.35 MB

The prophet Malachi says that a prophet will come before the Messiah to make things ready. We see this in his prophecy today.  In Matthew, Jesus specifically quotes that prophecy when talking about John the Baptist.  He says that John is Elijah. In doing this, Jesus does two things. First, He shows us that John is the fulfillment of that prophecy. But secondly, if John is the one who will make things ready for the Messiah, Jesus is saying this - He is the Messiah. He is the one that all the ...

Reflections with Andy - O Little Town of Bethlehem - Micah 5:2 and Matthew 2:1–6

November 28, 2023 11:00 - 11 minutes - 7.63 MB

The Wise Men come looking for the new King of the Jews. They didn’t know where He was born, so they went to the place that seemed appropriate, the palace. When they got there, they found out from the religious scholars that the prophet Micah, centuries ago told us that Bethlehem is where the messiah was to be born. O Little Town of Bethlehem. It would be easy to miss if you weren’t paying attention. So, let’s do just that, friends. Let’s read the Bible; let’s pay attention. Let’s see where t...

Reflections with Andy - The Suffering Servant - Isisah 53

November 27, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.52 MB

Isaiah wrote hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus. Yet today, we see one of the most beautiful images of what it was that Jesus did upon the cross.  He was beaten, bruised, and died for our sins.  He suffered for the sins of many.  Today, through Jesus, our sins are forgiven.  He has atoned for our sins.  He has paid the price that we could not pay. We are forgiven.  God’s wrath is satisfied.  Never forget what God has done for us on the cross.  Never forget that.  We see in Isaiah, h...

Reflections with Andy - Praise the Lord - Psalm 150

November 24, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.2 MB

Today’s Psalm is a Psalm of active praise. The Psalmist tells us to praise the Lord.  Praise Him with all that we are. With voice, with action, with everything.  Of the best ways that we can increase our praise, increase our thanksgiving, and increase our heart for God is to be active in our praise. Today, name what it is that you are thankful for. Name God’s goodness and mercy. Name what God has done for you. Name it!  And what we find, when we name these things, we find the more we name, t...

Reflections with Andy - Thanksgiving - Psalm 136

November 23, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.24 MB

Happy Thanksgiving!  Today’s Psalm repeats itself over and over again. The steadfast love of the Lord endures forever. I love that this repeats itself so often because, if we are going to be honest, there are times when we forget.  We can forget what is true. We can forget who we are. We can forget who we are. We repeat the truth to ourselves, even when we don’t believe it.  We repeat the truth to ourselves, even when we doubt it. It doesn’t stop being true when we struggle with it. That is ...

Reflections with Andy - I Lift Up My Eyes - Psalm 121

November 22, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.31 MB

We are looking today at my favorite Psalm 121. This is a Psalm I just find myself quoting over and over again. It always seems to be on the tip of my tongue.  Part of the reason is because when I was a younger Christian, I found myself singing this Psalm over and over again. I’m including a link to the version I used to sing along to. In that, this Psalm became a part of my deep spiritual life. I love God’s Word. This Psalm reminds me of just how much I love the Bible. Make your home there. ...

Reflections with Andy - Remember Your Chains - Psalm 107

November 21, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.18 MB

Today we look at Psalm 107. This Psalm has a heading, “Thanksgiving for Deliverance from Many Troubles.”  This Psalm looks at the many troubles that the people have gone through and how it was always God’s steadfast love that delivered them.  It is important for us to remember what the Lord has brought us through. There’s an old Steven Curtis Chapman song - “Remember Your Chains,” that this Psalm reminded me of.  When we remember where the Lord has brought us from, we can be thankful for whe...

Reflections with Andy - The Sheep of His Pasture - Psalm 100

November 20, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.23 MB

As we start our week of Thanksgiving, we begin with Psalm 100. This is one of my personal favorites of the Psalms because it tells us this. We are loved by God. But not only are loved by God, but we are worthy of being loved by God because He made us. We are His. We are the sheep of his pasture. He has made us, He has formed us, we are His. We are loved today.  So, we enter His courts with praise because of what He has done for us. Today, give thanks and praise because you are loved by an am...

Sunday Sermon - All Good Things

November 20, 2023 11:00 - 18 minutes - 12.7 MB

In our message from November 19, 2023, Andy shares with us from James 1:17.  We are reminded that all good gifts are from above.  If it is in your life and it is a good thing, it is from God. All of these gifts of grace, they point us to the love and salvation of our God. All good things point us to Jesus!

Reflections with Andy - Reality - Acts 28: 23-30

November 17, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.53 MB

It is easy for us to read the Bible, like ancient history or a fairy tale at worst.  We can forget that these were real people whom God worked through. Paul was just flesh and blood, just like me and you. And the same God that worked through Paul to do such things is the same God who works through you and I, if we will allow.  These are real people with real stories and real life.  This is not make-believe; this is reality.  And a real God was at work in real ways. Then, and He still is toda...

Reflections with Andy - Rome - Acts 28: 11-22

November 16, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.07 MB

After many hard days, Paul finally made it to Rome. Here is where he will spend the rest of his days teaching, preaching, and sharing the gospel - Jesus is Lord. That is the gospel; that is Good News. Jesus is Lord.  Because of Paul and how God uses him, we see that the Good News will take hold and spread throughout all of Europe.  As Tim Keller has taught us, Christianity is the only religion whose geographic center has shifted.  Our faith is about following Jesus, that's it. And anyone who...

Reflections with Andy - Paul and Snakebites - Acts 28: 1-10

November 15, 2023 11:00 - 11 minutes - 8.23 MB

Today, we see they have made it to the island of Malta. It is there, under the kindness of the residents, Paul is by the fire and bitten by a snake. This seemingly tragic incident shows God’s hand of provision and protection upon Paul.  And then as we read this story, it’s a neat thing to look at how this passage goes back to the “longer” ending of the Gospel of Mark. We see how the end of Mark and Acts 28 are very deeply connected.  Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. In 10 short...

Reflections with Andy - Walk and Talk - Acts 27: 13-44

November 14, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.45 MB

Everything that Paul told the crew would happen has happened. The ship has wrecked. They nearly died. It has been a hard journey. Paul’s words have proven true.  You know what this means?  Everyone on this ship now knows and believes that Paul is a man of God. His words have proven true. They believe him. It is important for in our lives to make sure that our walk matches our talk so that when we give witness to how good Jesus is, folks will trust and believe us, for they know our integrity....

Sunday Sermon - Failure Isn't Forever

November 13, 2023 11:00 - 22 minutes - 15.8 MB

In our Traditional message from November 12, 2023, Andy shares with us from James 1: 2-4.  We will have suffering. We will have a crisis of faith. But through these things and by God's grace, we are drawn closer to God and each other. We become who God is making us to be, as our trials help make our faith whole.

Reflections with Andy - When They Don’t Listen - Acts 27: 1-12

November 13, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.42 MB

Paul sets off to sail for Rome, and he sees early on that the trip will have troubles. Things will not go well, including the potential loss of life. And no one listens. What do we do, when we see those we love make bad choices?  What are we to do? We know that God is at work in all things, even pain and consequences. So, we pray, trusting in God to teach, protect, and guide. We trust in God, even when we see that the road ahead will be hard.  Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. I...

Reflections with Andy - Almost Persuaded - Acts 26: 24-32

November 10, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.32 MB

Agrippa asks Paul if he is trying to make Agrippa a Christian. Paul says yes, on God’s timeline. Conversion, that’s is not up to us. Salvation, that’s in God’s hands. Our job is to be faithful, to preach, teach, and invite. But we don’t save people. That is the work of the Holy Spirit. So, today, be faithful, no matter where you find yourself. Pray for others. Pray for the Spirit to move.  Our job is to be faithful. The rest is up to God. Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. In 10 ...

Reflections with Andy - Kicking Against the Goads - Acts 26: 1-23

November 09, 2023 11:00 - 11 minutes - 7.82 MB

Jesus asks Paul why does he kick against the goads.  We’ll talk about what this phrase means today. The goads were things the Romans used to keep animals and people walking on the right path.  They kept them on the road. It hurt to step on one.  There is this image today of Paul kicking against it. How often in our lives do we kick against the path God is leading us on? This only causes us needless and useless pain.  Today, we talk a little more about this concept. Join us for our daily re...

Reflections with Andy - King Who? - Acts 25: 13-27

November 08, 2023 14:00 - 10 minutes - 7.15 MB

When you read the Gospel and Acts, you see “King Herod” mentioned a lot.  Herod the Great, Herod Antipas.  Agrippa. Agrippa again. Who were these kings? How were they related? What did they do?  Who was really in charge? Today we are going to take a few minutes and look at who these kings were. What was their role? What did they do?  Join us as we learn about all the Herods in the Bible. Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. In 10 short minutes, he'll dig a little deeper into Script...

Reflections with Andy - Conflict - Acts 25: 1-12

November 07, 2023 11:00 - 11 minutes - 7.68 MB

There is much conflict in this passage today. Festus doesn’t see anything worthy of charges against Paul.  Yet to turn him loose would bring conflict with the religious leaders.  So, here he is, stuck. Sometimes we feel like that, don’t we?  We are in conflict often. Sometimes, the only way forward is a choice that we may not want to make. Sometimes, there is no way forward, and we just have to trust. Today, if you are in conflict, take the steps that can bring peace.  And if there are no st...

Sunday Sermon - Hope

November 06, 2023 11:00 - 18 minutes - 13 MB

In our All Saints Sunday sermon from our Traditional service, Andy shares with us from 1 John 3: 1-3. We have hope, but we don't always have certainty. But we have can have hope because hope is a person.  And that person is Jesus!

Reflections with Andy - Is He Safe? - Acts 24: 24-27

November 06, 2023 11:00 - 10 minutes - 7.55 MB

Paul preaches to Felix about the Christian life. And Felix has this reaction. He’s afraid!  He’s scared of all this means and what this may look like. It reminds me of the quote about Aslan from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.  Is he (Aslan, the Christ figure) safe?  No, but he is good.  Jesus is not always safe. He may scare us and call us into the things that frighten us. But we can be assured of this fact, this truth. He is always, always, always good.  We know that. He is always g...

Reflections with Andy - Resurrection - Acts 24: 10-23

November 03, 2023 10:00 - 10 minutes - 7.28 MB

Paul argues today about the power of the resurrection.  Jesus is raised.  The resurrection is real, and it changes everything.  Jesus Christ has overcome even death.  And if Jesus has overcome even death, then what do we have to be afraid of?  If a death has been defeated, then nothing in life or death can come against us.  We have nothing to fear.  Do not live a life of fear! Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. In 10 short minutes, he'll dig a little deeper into Scripture and hel...

Reflections with Andy - Too Comfortable - Acts 23: 23 - 24: 9

November 02, 2023 10:00 - 10 minutes - 7.3 MB

Sometimes, we can get so comfortable in our lives that we don't want to, for we may even forget how to follow Jesus.  Today we see the religious leaders; they didn't like Jesus disrupting things.  He was messing with the way things always were.  He was calling them out of their comfort and on to being faithful.  That's hard.  We may not always want to do it.  But let us never mistake being comfortable for being alive.  Jesus calls us to faithfulness.  Not to comfort.  Join us for our daily...

Reflections with Andy - All Hallow’s Eve - Hebrew 12: 1-3

October 31, 2023 10:00 - 11 minutes - 7.65 MB

Today is Halloween.  Do you know the religious history of this day?  A lot has happened throughout church history, from Martin Luther to the celebration of our saints and those who have passed into the Church Triumphant.  After all, we are surrounded by a mighty cloud of witnesses!  So, while we may not think about it, today has some deep religious meaning!    Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. In 10 short minutes, he'll dig a little deeper into Scripture and help you better under...

Sunday Sermon - Blood from a Turnip

October 30, 2023 10:00 - 18 minutes - 12.7 MB

In our Traditional sermon from October 29, 2023, we hear the story of the widow and Elijah. She had given all that she could give, and now Elijah wanted more?  You can't get blood from a turnip. But when we look closer, we see that her call to give was actually her call to live.  When we give, we actually find life.

Reflections with Andy - God’s God This - Acts 23: 12-22

October 30, 2023 10:00 - 10 minutes - 7.21 MB

Sometimes, we feel the pressure that it is all up to us. Don’t worry. God’s got this.  We see that Paul is nearly killed. There is a plan to ambush and kill Paul. But, Paul is saved, and in his saving, Paul is headed further down the road to where God wants him, in Rome, preaching. We may not always understand what is happening at the moment. It may not always make sense. But we know that God is at work, and we know that we can’t mess up the plans of God. Our job is to be faithful. We can tr...

Reflections with Andy - Sadducees and Pharisees - Acts 22: 30 - 23: 11

October 27, 2023 10:00 - 10 minutes - 7.27 MB

We see Paul continue to be very smart.  The Lord has told him that he was to go to Rome and testify about Him. That is where all this is headed.  But before we get there, we see some internal conflict among the religious leaders. We see a fight among the Sadducees and Pharisees. But who were these people?  Who were these groups?  What did they represent?  What did they believe?  Today, we’ll look a little bit deeper at the Sadducees and Pharisees and learn who they were.  Join us for our d...

Reflections with Andy - Listen - Acts 22: 22-29

October 26, 2023 10:00 - 10 minutes - 7.2 MB

Paul plays his Roman citizen card today.  Paul tells the soldiers beating him that he is a citizen of Rome, and they stop what they are doing immediately. They are not allowed to do that.  Paul’s destination to Rome continues.  He is heading there, for the glory of God. It is interesting that Paul had been telling the people his testimony, telling them what God had done, but they would not listen. They would not open their ears; open their hearts. They would not listen. Today, do we listen t...

Reflections with Andy - Jesus Changes Lives - Acts 22: 6-21

October 25, 2023 10:00 - 10 minutes - 7.48 MB

Paul finishes his testimony today.  He tells of how Jesus has changed him.  Jesus changes lives, y’all.  We see that Paul told all the folks all that he did, and after he was saved, folks didn’t want to believe him. They knew all that he had done, and it was hard to let go of his actions.  We should learn to forgive ourselves for our past mistakes and, in the same way, learn to forgive others of their past mistakes.  I’ll forgive you, and you forgive me. And we’ll live in God’s goodness.  Le...

Reflections with Andy - God Has You Where He Has You - Acts 21: 37 - 4:5

October 24, 2023 10:00 - 10 minutes - 7.36 MB

Paul gives us his background today. We see all that he has done, all he has learned from, all that has happened in his life. He was uniquely positioned to make a difference for the kingdom by bridging the gap between the Gentiles and the Jews. He had that ability because of who he was.  Today, God has you where He has you for a reason. Maybe that reason is to learn. Maybe it is to act.  Prayerfully listen to the Spirit today. He will reveal.  He will show you.  Listen, and you will learn why...

Sunday Sermon - Why We Teach

October 23, 2023 11:00 - 20 minutes - 14.3 MB

In our Traditional message from October 22, 2023, Andy shares with us from 2 Timothy 2: 1-10.   Why do we teach?  We find that when we pour into others, we are the ones who are blessed. It is in the giving that we receive!

Reflections with Andy - Assume the Best- Acts 21: 27-36

October 23, 2023 10:00 - 11 minutes - 7.96 MB

Today, we see Paul begin to really see the opposition that was going to come to him. Individuals stir up much trouble and try to even kill him. They assume the worst about Paul, that he did something to offend them when in reality, he went out of his way to avoid doing just that.  Their worst-case assumption leads to riots and much trouble.  Today, do we assume the best of each other or the worst of each other?  Those assumptions will shape much of how we live together and how we serve toget...

Reflections with Andy - Means and End - Acts 21:17-26

October 20, 2023 10:00 - 11 minutes - 7.6 MB

Paul gets to Jerusalem today.  There was much concern among the Jewish believers that Paul had been telling Jews to ignore the law, so the church leader asked Paul to participate in some of the rituals. Because for Paul, it wasn’t about the rituals; it was about Jesus.  It is easy for us to confuse the means for the end. The end is knowing Jesus. That’s what matters. The means is how we do it, and that may look different for every one of us. Let’s focus on the end, knowing Jesus. Let’s not e...

Reflections with Andy - Courage - Acts 21:1-16

October 19, 2023 10:00 - 10 minutes - 7.22 MB

Paul is told twice today, don’t go to Jerusalem.  If you do, it will end badly for you.  You will die. But Paul says he is called to go, even if it means his death.  He is called by God to do this, so he has courage.  Courage is not being afraid. Courage is being afraid and doing the right thing anyway. Stay rooted in the Spirit.
