Wondering how FANS 6, 12, and 24 hour ULTRA race got it's name? FANS is an acronym which stands for Furthering Achievement through a Network of Support, is a program of Pillsbury United Communities (PUC) in Minneapolis, Minnesota that supports urban teenagers in achieving their goal of earning a college education. The FANS Race is an annual 6, 12, and 24 hour ultra walk & running race that supports the FANS Scholarship Fund.
Sending youth to college is achievable if we concentrate our efforts on education, and on building a network of support around every child.
Minnesota has a distinction that none of us can be proud of: its education achievement gap is one of the worst in the nation. On so many levels—from economics to social justice—we can no longer afford to ignore the persistence of the achievement gap that has already laid claim to too many of our children and young people. It is time to confront this problem head-on, and programs like FANS, do just that.
FANS prepares youth in 9th through 12th grade for college. Youth and staff work together to develop plans to achieve goals like delaying parenthood, resisting drugs, contributing to the community, and going to college. Youth are also given opportunities to find scholarships, prepare for the ACT/SAT tests, and look at career opportunities that align with college programs. Participating youth who fulfill the requirements are eligible to earn college scholarship money (through the FANS Scholarship Fund) upon graduating from high school.
Working together as a community, we can change the high school graduation and college enrollment rates for urban core youth of color.
