Along The Camino/At Basecamp

36 episodes - English - Latest episode: about 1 year ago -

These stories are my response to walking the Camino de Santiago. It is not a practical guide, nor a series of interviews, nor a memoir. It is story, inspired by my real experiences and infused occasionally with a layer of holy imagination. I know it is worthwhile because I am not just hoping to tell my own story. I am hoping to tell more of the whole story, glimpse more of the whole truth. So, welcome pilgrim! Because I’m a firm believer that whether or not you have already walked or are interested in walking the Camino de Santiago, or a pilgrimage at all, guess what? …YOU'RE ALREADY ON ONE! Helpful hint: If you love descriptive or philosophical ponderings..stick to the even-numbered episodes. If you appreciate imagination, faith and asking what could be...go for the odds. But I hope you can listen to all.
Sincerely-Hollee Brock

WHOLEHEARTED THANKS to: ***Kellie Haddock- beautiful person/amazing musician IG @kelliehaddockmusic and @kelliehaddock for the use of “Eden’s Dream” with Ben Shive and Sarah Masen ***Brock Rustand for being an anchor & doing some impressive audio engineering ***Krue for you ***Ella for your spiral ***my Mom=best cheerleader ever ***Gayle for the graphics ***my priceless family and friends who cheered for me while I was on this pilgrimage-both walking and writing ***Chattanooga for being awesome ***Sockwell Socks for being the best socks ever & constant Camino companions ***All the people who maintain, support, and cheer along the Camino de Santiago! A word about me in the words of Jehanne de Quillan (in the introduction to The Gospel of the Beloved Companion)- "...being neither an academic nor a scholar by profession, I realized that rather than a hindrance, the slack granted me a freedom that would likely be unavailable to those closely guarding the reputations within their chosen field. Not having a reputation to lose means that one can proceed with one’s work without concern for the ripples that it might generate among those who oppose one’s conclusions.”

The Banquet

June 25, 2023 21:00 - 13 minutes - 9 MB

ORIGINAL story that my precious brothers & sisters wrote for me on my birthday.

33. Epicenter

January 13, 2022 18:00 - 16 minutes - 11.6 MB

What was taking my breath away at this moment, was the historical context that was superimposing itself on this scene of Jesus leaning back against a cross. Like a color by number picture, the more this beautiful October day in the 21st century in Spain was colored in by what it meant for Jesus to be by a cross in the Middle East 2 millenia ago.

32. The Long Walk Home

July 13, 2020 15:00 - 15 minutes - 10.6 MB

“Well, I would walk 500 miles ...And I would walk 500 more, just to be the one who walked 1000 miles to fall down at your door”    -the Proclaimers Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehaddockmusic and @kelliehaddock  for the use of “Eden’s Dream” with Ben Shive and Sarah Masen

31. To The End Of The Earth

July 13, 2020 12:00 - 12 minutes - 8.29 MB

“A pack of three guys jogged past me and shouted ‘to Finisterre’! I called back ‘to the end of the earth’!  I noticed one of the concrete columns that lined the Camino and marked the kilometers left. The Camino Frances’ counted down from 778 kilometers starting at St Jean Pied de Port with completion (0 kilometers) at the cathedral in Santiago de Compostella. From there a new countdown had commenced for the Camino Finisterre.  This particular marker said 10.  10 kilometers to go til the end ...

30. Ubuntu

July 13, 2020 09:00 - 13 minutes - 9.44 MB

"UBUNTU is an understanding of humanity that knows that no one can be human alone, that my humanity is bound up in your humanity and yours in mine. An African idiom: ”A person is a person through other persons”  Human life is meant to be shared. We learn how to be human through association with other humans. It is the undergirding of the true community. Once you begin to see it, you see it everywhere. More than see it though-you experience it!” Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehaddockmus...

29. Finding The Way

July 13, 2020 07:00 - 15 minutes - 11 MB

“The sun hangs lower over the ocean as I go further down and deeper into this path. I try to amuse myself that perhaps the blood sacrifice of my bare legs would pacify the angry cliff god that I imagined was threatening to hurl me over the side. …..  I really have no idea where I am, no one knows where I am, the sun is setting and one misstep could lead to a fall and, I repeat, NO ONE knows where I am. All I knew to pray is that I would  find the way.” Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehad...

28. Iconic Content Of A Pilgrimage

July 13, 2020 02:00 - 15 minutes - 10.5 MB

"Inherent in every Camino pilgrimage is some degree of iconic content. For me, it was my boots (named Martha and Mary), a blue suitcase, a tiny metal charm, the dirt in my phone case…." Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehaddockmusic and @kelliehaddock  for the use of “Eden’s Dream” with Ben Shive and Sarah Masen

27. Holy Water

July 12, 2020 22:00 - 16 minutes - 11 MB

Jesus was a sailor when he walked upon the water.  And he spent a long time looking from his lonely wooden tower.  And when He knew for certain that only drowning men could see him, He said, “All men will be sailors until the sea shall free them”  (Cohen) Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehaddockmusic and @kelliehaddock  for the use of “Eden’s Dream” with Ben Shive and Sarah Masen

26. The Incense And The Chaos

July 12, 2020 17:00 - 10 minutes - 7.13 MB

“We were packed like sardines in a tin in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostella, smelly pilgrims next to locals next to tourists from afar. This was the chaos. And now in finale, what we were all straining to behold, began the ceremony of cleansing. A series of thick ropes reach from the center arch of the cathedral connecting a group of 8 priests and a massive silver urn with smoke billowing out of it. This was the incense.” Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehaddockmusic and @kelliehad...

25. Something In My Teeth

July 12, 2020 15:00 - 11 minutes - 8.17 MB

“Jesus had a way of turning my interpretation upside-down sometimes. This was one of those times. What else was like that?!” Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehaddockmusic and @kelliehaddock  for the use of “Eden’s Dream” with Ben Shive and Sarah Masen

24. Timshel

July 12, 2020 12:00 - 14 minutes - 9.83 MB

“It was easy to picture the hills of central California as I walked across northern Spain. In many ways, the two landscapes favor each other. I wonder if that’s why I found myself totally immersed in this painful and beautiful story because I could picture it happening right there all around me. I’m guessing that added to the depth to which Steinbeck’s novel was able to plumb my soul.” Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehaddockmusic and @kelliehaddock  for the use of “Eden’s Dream” with Ben...

23. The Irishman And The Pilgrim

July 12, 2020 09:00 - 13 minutes - 8.96 MB

“Soon, we came upon another pilgrim who had paused to tie his shoe. He asked if he could join us. We three walked on together down the road from O’Cebriero talking about everything. We talked of things about which we were passionate, but what is even more noteworthy is that we felt great passion as we talked. I can only describe it as if our hearts were burning within us.” Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehaddockmusic and @kelliehaddock  for the use of “Eden’s Dream” with Ben Shive and Sa...

22. String Of Lights

July 12, 2020 07:00 - 15 minutes - 10.5 MB

“Close your eyes. Picture a string of lights strung across Northern Spain. That would be breathtakingly beautiful. I began to see the churches along the Camino de Santiago like that. Like a string of lights, lighting the way as we walk to wherever we will meet God. If you have the eyes to see it...walk with me following this string of lights from the Pyrenees to the west coast.” Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehaddockmusic and @kelliehaddock  for the use of “Eden’s Dream” with Ben Shive ...

21. O'Cebrierio

July 12, 2020 02:00 - 18 minutes - 12.8 MB

“To anyone observing me of course, this invisible wave of self-righteousness was imperceptible. To them, I was intently gazing at the crucifix. And I was but it was at the dust on top of his head again. I have this insane urge to go dust it. To go right now, get a ladder, climb up and use my bandana to clean his head off- the crown of thorns and all.” Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehaddockmusic and @kelliehaddock  for the use of “Eden’s Dream” with Ben Shive and Sarah Masen

20. Hearts Of Stone

July 11, 2020 22:00 - 13 minutes - 9.08 MB

"Between Rabanal and Molinesca there is a cross on a hill. All guide books have the location listed very clearly and therefore most pilgrims know exactly the day they will come to the foot of that cross. There is anticipation around this day because of the significant Camino tradition that when you come to the foot of the cross you are invited to leave your burdens behind." Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehaddockmusic and @kelliehaddock  for the use of “Eden’s Dream” with Ben Shive and S...

19. Walking In The Kingdom

July 11, 2020 18:00 - 13 minutes - 9.04 MB

"I had never thought about the harvesting of grapes and what the experience might feel like. This was wonderful! It was almost like these harvesters were calling the grapes forth into what they could become. It was like these people were singing a drinking song way before the wine was ready to drink, because they KNOW what is coming!" Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehaddockmusic and @kelliehaddock  for the use of “Eden’s Dream” with Ben Shive and Sarah Masen

18. Bicycletta

July 11, 2020 15:00 - 14 minutes - 10 MB

"The  Camino de Santiago is primarily walked by pilgrims on foot but in areas, some people ride bikes. I could not become LeBron sized and experience life with that impressive body, but I could try getting a bike for a few days and seeing what riding along the Camino is like.” Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehaddockmusic and @kelliehaddock  for the use of “Eden’s Dream” with Ben Shive and Sarah Masen

17. Transhumance

July 11, 2020 12:00 - 15 minutes - 10.9 MB

"The shepherd kept trying to rub behind the lamb’s ears and the lamb kept trying to lick the man’s hands. We couldn’t seem to take our eyes off them. Time seemed to stand still. Finally, the shepherd stood, the lamb still in his arms and still trying to lick him. He turned to us, smiled, and thanked us for caring for his sheep. And just like that, he went whistling off into the night.” Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehaddockmusic and @kelliehaddock  for the use of “Eden’s Dream” with Ben...

16. Best Day Ever

July 11, 2020 09:00 - 15 minutes - 10.6 MB

“As most of us were ending our day's journey in the nearby town, we settled into a great time of fellowship there. A group of guys from Austria, obviously old friends, pulled out their bunsen burner and a coffee percolator. It smelled so good and soon they offered me a cup. I accepted but only on the condition of a trade- I would trade them a strong riddle for a strong cup of coffee. They heartily agreed. With shade over our heads, cool water for our feet, and coffee for the soul, we all lea...

15. The Wall

July 11, 2020 07:00 - 14 minutes - 9.66 MB

“I walk back out into the evening air and lean against that shared wall. I picture how it creates a foundation for both the cathedral and the town square. They seem to sit in contrast sometimes- to be telling different stories- but maybe it’s all part of the same. They are not separate at all, they lean on, lean toward something more. This wall isn’t separating but connecting these two realities making them part of the same bigger story. This is why the church and the square should share a w...

14. Dimensional Danger

July 11, 2020 02:00 - 13 minutes - 9.4 MB

“All guidebooks, no matter what style or language they are written in, share one fundamental limitation. Everyone, without exception, is a 2-dimensional effort at describing something which is 3-dimensional. And herein lies the danger, a slippery slope that human nature can and has been sliding down for pretty much our whole existence. It’s the belief that knowing ABOUT something is knowing something.” Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehaddockmusic and @kelliehaddock  for the use of “Eden’...

13. How Jesus Saved Me Again

July 10, 2020 22:00 - 13 minutes - 9.57 MB

“Friends who had walked the Camino two years before warned me about this day. This was the day headed into Burgos, where for an unbelievably and excruciating long way, the Camino literally skirts the length of the airport runway. Not the Camino's finest hour EXCEPT, just like as my mom says, it takes a bad day to know a good one” … .... “Have I mentioned that in so many ways, Jesus has impeccable timing? Because at that moment which was threatening to get very awkward, Jesus came striding u...

12. Sensation Delicious

July 10, 2020 18:00 - 13 minutes - 9.02 MB

“Sensation-delicious (shout out to Nia) cues us to connect with the sensations in our bodies. Awareness like this, when all of our faculties are focused together, has a powerful effect in us as it essentially operates like a magnet, bringing parts of us together. We tend to shatter and scatter to some degree in response to life experiences but there is a fundamental state of re-integration that we long for! These moments remind us that we were designed to be whole beings.” Thanks to Kellie ...

11. Milk And Muesli

July 10, 2020 15:00 - 10 minutes - 7.36 MB

"Life’s content is told in story. But not all stories are the same.  Some stories really happened. Some stories did not really happen that way. Some stories tell part of what happened. And some stories tell what could have happened.  All stories depend on the teller. All stories depend on the listener. Here’s my story about milk and muesli. Listen how you may." Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehaddockmusic and @kelliehaddock  for the use of “Eden’s Dream” with Ben Shive and Sarah Masen

10. Traveling At The Speed Of Love

July 10, 2020 12:00 - 18 minutes - 12.6 MB

“If there really is no one for whom I am responsible, nor that I can rely on during this time. If no one is keeping track of me or very possibly even noticing me… how will I live? How will I travel over these miles and weeks, often hot, often hungry, often tired, sometimes wet, sometimes lost. There are buses, there are trains, there are airplanes for that matter, that could get me where I’m going. I tempted for a moment to just post up in Pamplona til it is time to go home.” Thanks to Kell...

9. The Peach

July 10, 2020 09:00 - 14 minutes - 9.8 MB

"Where are we going? I shout.     To the top! he responds. We are going back to where I just came from. It’s a steep ascent back up to the highest point of the Camino, where I had paused about an hour ago to eat a peach, like a good Georgia girl. Why? I asked.       You forgot something. he said." Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehaddockmusic and @kelliehaddock  for the use of “Eden’s Dream” with Ben Shive and Sarah Masen

8. (re)Incarnation

July 10, 2020 07:00 - 14 minutes - 10.4 MB

“The word, “incarnation” followed me around for the year preceding my pilgrimage. It followed me because it was trying to convince me that I am one. I am one and guess what if you have a body, so are you. So it might surprise you that I had to be reminded of this.  .....Somewhere along the way, I had conflated my thoughts about life with life. And that’s when Flannery’s voice unapologetically slammed open the door of my bobblehead and said,“Your beliefs will be a light by which you see, but ...

7. Holy Cow

July 10, 2020 02:00 - 9 minutes - 6.58 MB

This story adds a splash of holy imagination to an actual experience!  “I found myself in a state of “standing on my tippy-toes”. You know that feeling when there’s something going on that you really really want to see and so without even realizing it, you’re standing on your tippy-toes to get the best view you can?.... This fierceness I had witnessed was different than any I had ever seen before. It wasn’t the intimidation or flexing of muscles like in the movies or in the boardrooms or on ...

6. Magic Shows & Concerts

July 09, 2020 22:00 - 13 minutes - 9.27 MB

“I look at the dirt and the rocks and the trees and flowers now. I can only imagine that day when all things are made new. What colors, what scents, what flavors will be unfurled?! What secrets do weeds hold? How tall will trees grow? What else will change about the nature we are familiar with now? What does it look like when all things are made new? And what part do we play in this?” Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehaddockmusic and @kelliehaddock  for the use of “Eden’s Dream” with Ben ...

5. Along The Camino

July 09, 2020 19:00 - 12 minutes - 8.51 MB

“As we walked in sweet silence, maybe it was just me but the landscape seemed to become more vibrant when he walked by. The smells were more distinct, the colors clearer and stronger, even the animals seemed to be more animalish. The sheep were more sheepish. The birds flew a little more regally. The cows mooed with more meaning. Even me, creature that I am, felt more me-ish when I was near him. In fact, yes, it was like everything woke up a little more in his presence.” Thanks to Kellie Ha...

5. Along The Way

July 09, 2020 18:00 - 12 minutes - 8.51 MB

Buckle your seat belts, here's where holy imagination starts making appearances!!! “As we walked in sweet silence, maybe it was just me but the landscape seemed to become more vibrant when he walked by. 4. Regional Appearances

July 09, 2020 15:00 - 13 minutes - 9.45 MB

“It strikes me how utterly simple and undramatic the beginning is. There was no starting gun. I didn’t tell anyone I was leaving, or ask permission, or explain myself. I didn’t do anything but step out of the door and start walking. I felt sure that people would stare at me and whisper, “what does she think she’s doing- does she really think she’s just going to walk across Northern Spain?!” Thanks to Kellie Haddock IG @kelliehaddockmusic and @kelliehaddock  for the use of “Eden’s Dream” wit...

3. Seeds, Stones & Cherries On Top

July 09, 2020 12:00 - 14 minutes - 9.92 MB

“So now, that pilgrimage which was already underway inside me enters a stage I affectionately call ….“boots on the ground". So it was, and perfectly so, that on that beautiful evening I stood by that bronze arrow nestled into the cobblestones, at the top of that little hill, under that stone archway in the walls of Saint Jean Pied de Port. Some of you can picture it because you too have stood in that exact spot. Hopefully, though, all of us can picture it in our imaginations.” Thanks to Kel...

2. Holy Imagination

July 09, 2020 09:00 - 16 minutes - 11.1 MB

Imagination might seem like a dangerous thing to do, but perhaps, it's more dangerous not to. As I walked, I began to ask for holy imagination. I had no idea how meaningful it would be. “I had to walk enough miles to get here. To stop fighting, stop resisting this process of my brain becoming quiet and still because at first, it felt like I was losing something. It took this pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago to usher me into this strange new category of being where rather than empty… I...
