Sermon delivered on Sunday, August 26, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.
SERMON DESCRIPTION
Have you ever noticed yourself getting very upset, very depressed, or very desirous about someone or something and wondered afterward, “What came over me?” In ancient times, we might have thought of these occurrences as possessions. Even today, there are people who seek out clergy to perform exorcisms to rid them of what they consider a demonic possession or a spell.
What comes over us can be something as common as an uncontrollable addiction, a bad temper, a mental disorder, a feeling of shame, or a response to past trauma. Psychologists often refer to “buttons” that can get pushed by a person or situation and that can send us over the edge of control. Part of the journey of being human involves realizing that there are chemical, psychological, and situational circumstances that can lead us to undermine our own effectiveness and success and can hinder our capacity to be agents of free will.
On Sunday I will explore how and why we sometimes feel overcome, and some of the things we can do to take back control.
