In recent days, social media has been awash with an incident involving a priest attacking the highly acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie during a memorial mass for her departed mother. Her case is not isolated and so what does this incidence and similar ones call us to as the people of God and especially those pastoral workers  who have freely chosen and been entrusted with the work of shepherding the flock. 

Lent gives as an opportunity to draw closer to God through prayer, penitence and generosity. Reflecting on the cries of a groaning earth, an aggrieved people and the opportunity provided by the Synodal path to listen to one another, to repent, to seek forgiveness so that we may live out our Christian commitment more authentically.

This episode also critiques the distortion of the mourning and burial rites, taking away from the essence and turning them into events that financially drain grieving families and friends.
