Everything I’m afraid of is an idol for me. Each has substantial influence over my life. I’ve given away my sense of peace to every one of my fears.

I essentially say to each fear, “You own me. You dominate my psyche. I experience strong emotions when I think about you.”

In a sense, our attachment to fear is so strong that we become enmeshed with it. And then we lose ourself. Consider this line from A Course in Miracles: “Identify with fear, and you will be a stranger to yourself.”

When we identify with fear, we lose sight (literally and figuratively) of who we are. Not only have we become stranger to ourselves, but so have everyone else. Everyone we look at - each encounter we experience - is stranger meeting stranger, no matter how “well” we may know the other person.

But when we bring each fear to the light of truth, they disappear into the nothingness from which they came. And with great relief and incredible peace, we remember who we are - including everyone else.
