In 1968, Fred Hansen began displaying what he called the "Minnesota Iceman" on the local fair circuit, dazzling paying customers with the many tales of how he came upon it. However, unlike most sideshow scammers, when the show was published in a national magazine profile, Fred quickly replaced the specimen with a vinyl dummy, fearing possible legal repercussions for allegedly shooting and killing the beast.
