Roqaia Reda was born with a rare neurodegenerative muscular disorder in Alexandria, Egypt. The only solution for a cure? One particular medicine whose cost is $2.1 million.

Roqaia’s parents made the Egyptian minimum wage of $145 a week. For context, it would take them saving every penny for over 600 years to afford the treatment.

This is the story of how Roqaia’s community, and eventually the globe, banded together and donated to fund the payment for her treatment. Most of those are from complete strangers, with an average donation of $1 to $2.
