Today we welcome two guests hailing from the non-profit organization the FanDames Initiative, Lauren Harris (aka Scribe) or May Hemmer (or the Cocoa Barbie). Lauren and May share the mission of the FanDames with us, which encompasses creating and maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for female fans, both in online fandom and IRL meet-ups like conventions. The FanDames aim to support and provide resources for fangirls, whether it be  through panel discussions about geek girl stereotypes or through an ingenious cosplay repair station for potential costume malfunctions on the convention floor. Lauren is an author of works including the Spellhounds series, and May is a burlesque performer, who brings her love of fandom into cosplay and “nerdlesque.” Over the course of our discussion this week, we received their distinct and illuminating insights and personal experiences with fandom, acceptance, and the importance of finding supportive communities as fangirls.
