In light of  recent news about the end of the 'urban' music category, it's time to interrogate 'pop' as well. If you look at Pop award show categories or Pop charts, you'll see very few Black women. On this week's #YoungBeautifulSuccessful, Gabbie examines systemic racism and misogynoir across genre over the last 60+ years in the music industry. She discusses the experiences of FKA Twigs, Tinashe, Normani, and more in the industry and how genre can often be based more on one's 'race' and appearance than the actual sound of their music.
