Conditions have quickly been deteriorating on Rikers Island, the city’s notorious jail complex. From staffing shortages to increased violence and concerns over COVID, lawmakers are calling the situation on Rikers a humanitarian crisis. And this week, a 12th person in the custody of the Department of Correction died.

Errol examines the emergency with two journalists who have been covering the issue for years: Graham Rayman of the New York Daily News and Reuven Blau of the City.

They discuss the challenges lawmakers face, how the jail got into a state of chaos and what can be done to address the situation.
