As Phil notes in this episode, “character voice” can make or break your manuscript. It’s one of the most common reasons for manuscript rejection. So maybe it’s a little bit important to understand. Is it slang? Dialogue? Is it MORE than just dialogue?

How do you write a good character voice? Does anybody REALLY know?

Well, we have some ideas, at least. It’s one of those aspects of your character that you know when it’s there, and you know when it isn’t, but working out the details can be a challenge. A process. A skill you hone, over time.

But maybe after listening to this episode, we’ll all need a little less practice.
