Lord Peter Hain, the son of South African-born anti-apartheid activists whose childhood was spent in Pretoria, was a British MP for 24 years and served in the governments of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown for twelve years, seven in the UK Cabinet. He has held positions like the Secretary for Northern Ireland, Secretary of State for Wales, and the Leader of the House of Commons. Lord Hain is the author of 24 books, such as his biography of Nelson Mandela and his personal memoirs. He currently is a member of the House of Lords.
