UN Roundup - Yemen Pledge, Oscar-winning Roma and Blockchain

UN Correspondant Daniel Johnson gives us a recap on the Yemen pledging conference last week, with Secretary-General Guterres leading the appeal for $4.2 billion.

“Tens of thousands of people have been killed or injured since the conflict escalated, many of them civilians. Many more have died from preventable diseases, exacerbated by malnutrition. Twenty million people cannot reliably feed themselves or their families. Almost 10 million are just one step away from famine… One credible report puts the number of children under five who have died of starvation at more than 80,000.” - Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General

More than $2.6 billion was raised in Geneva, and there was good news after Mr Guterres announced that aid teams had managed to access the Red Sea Mills in Hudaydah which contain 51,000 tonnes of wheatgrain (although it is being checked to see if it is edible).

Roma follows a young domestic worker for a family in Mexico City’s middle-class Roma neighborhood. Delivering an artful love letter to the women who raised him, Cuarón draws on his own childhood to create a vivid and emotional portrait of domestic strife and social hierarchy amidst Mexico’s political turmoil of the 1970s.

Roma won the Oscar for Best Cinematography, Best Director and Foreign Language Film as well as the Venice Golden Lion, 3 Golden Globes and 4 Baftas.
