The road to Emmaus (13-35)The two disciples are going home after the PassoverJesus appears to them on the roadHe opens the Scriptures (25-27)He rebukes their unbeliefHe points them to the ScripturesHe explains what was written was about Him - Augustine wrote, The Old Testament is the New Testament concealed, the New Testament is the Old Testament revealedCF John 5:39 - “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me…”Steven Lawson has said - “[T]he entire Bible is about the Lord Jesus Christ. The Old Testament says He’s coming. The Gospels say He’s here. The book of Acts proclaim Him. The epistles explain Him. And Revelation says He’s coming again. That’s the Bible in a nutshell.”The upper room (36-49) - The same day, Sunday - the day of Jesus’ ResurrectionThe two disciples came back and told what had happenedJesus appeared and frightened the disciples. He ate fish to prove He was realThe gospel is laid out (45-47)Jesus gave them the ability to understand the Bible; cf 1 Corinthians 2:10-12 - “...these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.”The summary of the OT is that Jesus will “suffer and rise from the dead on the third day”Because of this (the summary of the OT), “repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in His name…” - this is the summary of the gospel ministry. Paul echoed this in Acts 20:21. Repentance and forgiveness are inseparable.Repentance - this is not a work or act of the flesh, this is recognition of our sinful state and need for forgiveness from outside ourselvesForgiveness of sins - this is seeking and receiving God’s complete pardon for our sins based solely on the finished work of Jesus. The ascension (50-53/ Acts 1:1-11)40 days later The Jerusalem, Judea/Samaria, Ends of the Earth - for the apostles, but still true for us. Also the outline of the book of Acts.Jesus re-promised the Holy Spirit - cf John 14, 16His return is also promised - The angels told the disciples to stop staring at the sky - the word used for “looking” means the disciples were trying to see spiritual realities with their physical eyes. They were probably trying to see into heaven. The angels tell them to stop because Jesus will return from the sky physically again at the time of His choosing. Cf 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 - “For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.”
