Michiko Smith & Rebel Hawaiʻi

I had the honor of sitting down with Michiko Smith, the Co-Founder of Rebel Hawaii. Rebel Hawaii is a grassroots initiative based on the island of Maui. Their mission is simple, and yet it addresses one of the biggest environmental challenges of our time, protecting ocean ecosystems.

Michiko and her fellow female rebels approach people on the beach, in the ocean, on boats, and on social media to educate them about the harmful effects that non-reef safe sunscreen has on our bodies and the reefs. They swap chemical-based sunscreen with people offering them a safe alternative instead-- saving one reef at a time.
