Friday, November 29th, 2019

Good morning and welcome to the WODDITY podcast for news about CrossFit. We are a daily podcast, Monday through Friday, doing CrossFit news in five minutes or less.

My name is Ben Garves and today is Friday, the 29th of November, 2019. Gobble, freakin’ gobble. Happy late Thanksgiving! Whether your goal is to binge on some football, nom on some turkey leftovers, fast out of protest, hide in a closet in the basement from your inlaws, or you’ve never heard of Thanksgiving because you’re not one of us crazy ‘mericans, happy holidays from the WODDITY family.

Mat Fraser's Chest Tattoo

As promised, we are back with the biggest headlines in the sport of fitness. I think our big segment today is going to be a familiar name, the good ol’ Mat Fraser. So, unless you’ve lived under a rock, you’ve probably seen Fraser’s new full-chest tattoo. It’s...different. I have found a silver lining, though. This gigantic bull skull will make more sense when Fraser’s iconic chest hair grows back, and it transforms from a skull into a normal hairy bull head. I guess.

Mat Fraser's Wealth and Finance Segment

Anyway, Fraser was featured in a segment on Yahoo Finance’s video series. He talked through the uncertainties of income as a professional athlete and how he’s invested in himself. As a classically-trained engineer, Mat Fraser has a mind for numbers and as a competitor he’s been known to be one of the most analytical athletes on the field. It’s a good segment and you’ll likely learn something about investing and the sport of fitness, simultaneously.

CrossFit Black Friday Deals

We’ve been building an ultimate guide to CrossFit gift ideas here at WODDITY. If you’re on the hunt for some good fitness gifts, in search of something special for that special someone on Black Friday, or simply want to splurge on yourself for Cyber Monday, check out WODDITY’s holiday gift guide. There’s a link in my show notes at WODDITY.com.

CrossFit Games Instagram Page

You could imagine everyone’s surprise when the CrossFit Games account popped back up on Instagram yesterday morning. It has gone from zero to 17.6k followers overnight. One person likely involved in bringing CrossFit interaction back to Instagram is Johnathan Haynes. He sat down during the Filthy150 to talk to Armen Hammer about the community, the internal struggles within the community, and how CrossFit is working to empower coaches to create more fans of the sport and the fitness movement. It’s a long watch, but it’s Black Friday. You have time. As always, the link to that is in my show notes at WODDITY.com. If there’s one thing you watch today, make it this one.

NOBULL’s First Fitness Film Festival

While we were live streaming through the Filthy150 last weekend, NOBULL ran its first Fitness Film Festival. The New York-based event saw a sold out crowd to watch special featured films from everyone between the Buttery Bros and NOBULL itself.

NOBULL’s film, entitled Who I’ve Always Been, takes a look at Tia-Clair Toomey, Katrin Davidsdottir, and Brooke Wells as competitive and inspiring women. The film from the Buttery Bros was an eight-minute segment of their upcoming documentary on the 2019 CrossFit Games.

Ben Bergeron Speaks at TED Event

The other thing you may have missed last weekend is legendary coach, author, and businessman Ben Bergeron speaking at a TEDx event in Santa Barbara. The theme of his talk was expanding a competitive mindset from the gym, the track, the field, into a competitive mindset in life. Jessica Danger at Morning Chalk Up wrote an excellent summary, and I’ve put a link to it in my show notes at WODDITY.com.

Other honorable mentions for a brief AMRAP Roundup today are:

CrossFit’s penalties for 20.5Hafthor Bjornsson and Annie Thorisdottir brought cameras along as they trained togetherJessica Danger and Brittany Marsh are back with a Fresh Cup of FitnessTommy Hackenbruck has confirmed his Legends invite for the 2020 Rogue Invitational

And, while we were all stuffing our faces with turkey and potatoes, James Newbury was completing an ironman triathlon only a few short weeks after a bike accident broke numerous bones and punctured a lung. Wow. I think I may be more lazy than I thought.

Alrighty, that wraps up news about CrossFit for Friday, the 29th of November. Happy Thanksgiving to those celebrating, and happy Thursday to those who aren’t. For WODDITY, I’m Ben Garves. Unless something breaks, we will chat on Monday.
