Pittsburgh-based cartoonist Jim Rugg is a walking encyclopedia of comics history and a testament to the advancement of the comics craft. In this episode, Rugg returns to Wits’ End to talk to (host) Shah Emami about comics.
The conversation starts off by covering the who, what, when, where and why of Rugg’s OCTOBRIANA 1976 comic. With OCTOBRIANA 1976, Jim Rugg breaks ground in how comics are made. The outlaw comic, successfully crowdfunded through Kickstarter, is the first fluorescent blacklight comic book of its kind.
This conversation is Rugg’s first time talking about his Octobriana comic since the Kickstarter ended.
During the talk, Shah & Rugg talk about the differences between the appeal of western comics and manga, Octobriana’s creator Petr Sadecky, the rights of creators (ex. Jack Kirby & Dave Cockrum), Rugg’s work on Cartoonist Kayfabe (with Ed Piskor), funding his first Kickstarter, 70s comics & much more.
