Missy Franklin credits her parents for their great parenting skills as she was introduced to all sports and activities while being most at home in the water and hopes others choose a sport because they have passion for it. MIssy reflects on the different stages of competition from youth competition where her focus was just on improving to qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Trials where there were no expectations to earning five medals. She describes the pressure and the expectations that followed to personal disappointment and personal reflection. Missy shares the importance of having rivals and friends and a college experience. She is a firm believer that the greatest lessons in life happen when and how you are supposed to learn them. Missy shares those lessons as well as the transition from a competitive sport’s career to life out of the pool, the challenges of re-defining oneself and the mental health issues that athletes can sometimes face in retirement.
