I Am Wilshire – Spencer Long.

Hometown: Dallas

Education: Savannah College of Art and Design, Richland College

Profession: Business assistant for a periodontist

Present city: Dallas

Tell us about your family.

I have a loving husband, Dwayne, and a hilarious 3-year-old named Cooper. My mom is the infamous Pam Haley and dad was Jim Haley.

Tell us about your work or volunteer life.

I’m incredibly lucky to love my job and the people I work with. I’ve worked for Dr. Brad Crump for seven years. I assist in reception duties and treatment plans and coordinate various dental surgeries and treatments.

What are your favorite hobbies?

I am an artist at heart and try to sprinkle in little projects. Our family loves being outdoors and enjoying nature in all its forms, so we are outside every chance we get.

What brought you to Wilshire and when?

I came to Wilshire when I was 3 months old.

Where are you engaged in Wilshire?

I attend Ithaka Class and serve on the Library Committee.

What has surprised you most about Wilshire?

Even though I’ve been absent for so long, Wilshire has such a strong hold to call me back.

Tell us about your faith journey.

Being born and raised in the church is a lot like the Parable of the Sower in Mark. You have every intention and opportunity to start on a fruitful path, but little did you know, you were going to be the seed that fell into thorns. After my dad died, I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to care about anymore, but it definitely wasn’t God. Most of my life has felt restless and aimless with no direction. However fun that might be at times, it’s been tiresome. After Cooper came and I got older, I thought I would try Wilshire again. Not even for the religion, but because I knew it was a place I could ask questions and learn how to do church and be curious all over again in a true community. I feel like a first-time member where everyone just happens to know me.

What do you think God is up to in your life right now?

I think God is really enjoying being the drink stirrer in the cocktail of my life right now.

What’s something interesting most people wouldn’t know about you?

My family appears in one of the paintings in the James Gallery. I’m the little girl turned around looking at you.

What adjectives best describe you?

I’m sarcastic (it’s more like a super power) and empathetic for everything, sometimes even inanimate objects.
