I Am Wilshire – Mary Carver.

Name: Mary Carver

Hometown: El Paso

Education: BA in elementary education, Trinity University

Present city: Dallas

Tell us about your family.

My son David is married to Maggie and has a son, Mason; they live in Dallas and are expecting Baby Charlie in August. My daughter Rachel is married to Eddie. They live in El Paso and have two daughters, Sophia and Lucy. I have two younger sisters who both live in Texas.

Tell us about your work or volunteer life.

I am retired now. I taught elementary school after college and again after raising children for 19 years. Then I changed to administrative work for a travel agency and then a real estate company. I have always volunteered at Wilshire and at my children’s schools.

What are your favorite hobbies?

Spending time with family and friends, reading, playing games, walking, knitting.

What brought you to Wilshire and when?

I was looking for a church when I moved to Dallas after college and was invited to Wilshire by a friend. I liked the music, and the people were very friendly. I was at Sanctuary Choir rehearsal the next Wednesday. I’ve been here for 46 years.

Where are you engaged in Wilshire?

I am director of Cord of Three Sunday School Class, a deacon and on the Committee on Committees and Library Committee. I’m also involved in many of the WOW! activities and ministries. I sang in Sanctuary Choir for many years and have also served as a Stephen Minister.

Tell us about your faith journey.

I grew up in the Episcopal church and was active in youth group and choir activities. I started attending a Bible study during college and began a personal relationship with Jesus. Being at Wilshire has given me many opportunities to grow in my faith. One of the most meaningful was participating and leading sessions of Companions in Christ, a small group experience in spiritual formation.

What’s something interesting most people wouldn’t know about you?

Most of my family trips growing up included tent camping. We saw so many beautiful sights and interesting places in our driving to all 48 continental states. I have a bounty of treasured memories.

What adjectives describe you?

Responsible, organized, caring, encouraging, a good listener.
