17-thousand Wellington City Council street lights aren't equipped to cope with strong wind gusts, and are now getting a fix up.

The adaptor on the LED lights, installed in 2018, has broken on a number of lamps -- causing 17 to smash to the ground, and 161 to droop.

The lights were tested with weights that did not move.

Former city councillor Chris Calvi-Freeman raised the issue earlier this year after he noticed several missing lamps and, upon closer inspection, saw the posts had wires hanging out of them and jagged metal.

He was stunned when he then discovered a heavy street lantern on the ground near his home.

He joins Nick Leggett on Wellington Mornings.
