The upper North Island's state of emergency is prompting reminders to those in other parts of the country.


Wellington's hilly terrain makes it prone to land slips, and heavy rain last year caused around a thousand slips across the city.


Flooding is less common, but residents are still urged to make plans.


Wellington Emergency Manager Jeremy Holmes says we can all learn from this.
