On today’s show we’re re-playing my interview from last year with Scott Harrison, CEO and Founder of Charity: Water. We’re doing this in honor of Giving Tuesday and because the work of Charity: Water is so important and powerful. There are over 600 million people on the planet who don't have access to clean drinking water; this is a solvable problem since the technology and resources are available and it has been Scott’s and his team’s mission for the past 13 years. Scott’s story is remarkable. I hope this conversation touches and inspires you. And, if you’re moved to contribute to Charity: Water, that will be amazing.
Takeaways:
[5:44] Scott Harrison talks about Charity: Water’s mission which is to end the water crisis.
[7:43] Giving Tuesday was created as a response to the overcommercialization of Thanksgiving.
[9:59] The beauty of the problem about accessibility to clean water is that it is a solvable issue.
[12:48] Dirty water kills more people around the world than all forms of violence.
[13:50] It is the women and the girls that are risking their lives to get water.
[16:14] Scott Harrison talks about his personal journey that brought him to the charity world.
[25:44] Scott explains how he reached a point in his life where he was ready to serve and do humanitarian work.
[29:40] Scott talks about how he arrived in Liberia in 2004, where there was no running water or electricity, a country devastated after 14 years of civil war.
[33:26] Scott shares how he came back to New York City to follow his life mission: bringing clean water to everyone in the world.
[35:06] The main principle of Charity: Water was that every dollar donated went entirely to the cause, while they reached out to other donors to cover other expenses of the organization.
[36:50] Scott started focusing on giving the donors updates about where their money is going.
[38:30] A charity should be well designed.
[43:10] We don't need more stuff, we can turn our birthdays into generosity moments inviting our friends and families to improve other’s lives.
[46:58] Scott tells the story about a 9-year-old girl in Seattle who donated her birthday and later after she passed away in an accident, her parents created “Rachel’s campaign” and raised millions of dollars.
[51:30] Scott talks about “The Spring Monthly Donation Program”, how it was structured, what it looks like to become a member, and how it created a predictable growth for Charity: Water helping more than 10 million people get clean water.
[55:28] During such a toxic political time, where we are fighting over everything, everyone can agree on this: water is life and it is essential for all human beings.
[56:30] How we spend our money should reflect our values; we invest more money in what we want to see more, and that is one of the bases of philanthropy.
