In 1984, after the success of the ground-breaking Superman movies starring Christopher Reeves, producers The Salkind Brothers decided to make a gender shift to try and capitalise on the female gap in the superhero audience - but in director Jeannot Scwarc's  Supergirl, their attempts only alienated their original audiences and degraded the franchise.
