I must be weird I don’t hate ads. I like that I get ads on Hulu, it shows me what else is out there. Otherwise, I might just end up watching Dragon Ball or the Office for the millionth time. Lately, I’ve been seeing ads for a Hulu original called Ramy. I finally had a chance to sit down and watch it and honestly I couldn’t stop.

It’s a show about a culture, about religion, about people I don’t understand. I had friends who are Muslim, but I’m a white guy who grew up Catholic, what the hell do I know? Ramy is a young Muslim America living in New Jersey, where the comedian Ramy Youssef grew up. He’s a dreamer, he’s an underdog, he wants to do something with his life. Although he is very modern in his views, he still tries to stay true to his religion. It’s important to him to not drink or take drugs, and go to the temple and pray.

The best bit is this show is from the eyes of someone who grew up after 9/11. They don’t shy away from racism and culture identity and what it means to be an American. Ramy is rich in comedy and the everyday struggle of Muslim Americans. I laughed and learned something.

This show is fun, smart and insightful. What’s more important isn’t what’s different, it’s all the things we have in common. Our mothers just want the best for us, everyone is just trying to find their place, find love.

This is a great show and I think everyone should watch it.
