The First World War could have happened very differently: not in 1914, but 1896. Here, an industrial war of unprecedented scale would have been fought by the British against the French. In the swamps of the Upper Nile, among the half-ruined, half-forgotten outpost known as Fashoda, a confrontation between a small group of French and British soldiers nearly engulfed Europe in flames. This momentous encounter… was the Fashoda Incident.
